온톨로지(ontology)

시맨틱웹(Semantic Web)에 관한 글을 찾다가 온톨로지(ontology)라는 단어를 접하게 되었다.
요즘 웹은 왜 이렇게 생소하고 모르는 단어들로만 가득한지... 매일 눈뜨면 새로운 용어가 생겨나는것 같다.

온톨로지(ontology):
온톨로지의 일반적인 의미는, 우주 안에 어떤 종류의 실체들이 존재하는가에 관한 연구 또는 관심을 말한다. 이 용어는 '실재'라는 의미의 그리스어 'onto'와 '논문 또는 강연' 등의 의미를 갖는 'logia'의 합성어로부터 유래되었다. 이것은 제일 원리 또는 사물의 본질에 관한 연구를 추구하는 형이상학의 한 분야이다.

정보기술에서의 온톨로지는, 전자상거래와 같이 지식의 어떤 특정 영역 내에 있는 실체 및 상호작용의 작업 모델을 의미한다. 미국 스탠포드 대학의 인공지능 전문가인 탐그루버에 따르면, 인공지능 분야에 있어서의 온톨로지는 "프로그램과 인간이 지식을 공유하는데 도움을 주기 위해 사용된 개념화 명세서"라고 정의하고 있다. 이러한 용례에서의 온톨로지는, 정보 교환용으로 합의된 어휘를 만들기 위하여 특정 자연언어로 정의되는 사물, 사건 및 관계 등과 같은 개념들의 집합이라 할 수 있다. In general, ontology (pronounced ahn-TAH-luh-djee) is the study or concern about what kinds of things exist - what entities there are in the universe. It derives from the Greek onto (being) and logia (written or spoken discourse). It is a branch of metaphysics, the study of first principles or the essence of things.

In information technology, an ontology is the working model of entities and interactions in some particular domain of knowledge or practices, such as electronic commerce or "the activity of planning." In artificial intelligence (AI), an ontology is, according to Tom Gruber, an AI specialist at Stanford University, "the specification of conceptualizations, used to help programs and humans share knowledge."
